The gardens of Dahlia Haven, located in Dairy Flat in rural Auckland, were looking a little bit shabby when I arrived, with Cyclone Lusi having messed up a few bushes.
Dahlia Haven is a family-run business supplying incredible dahlias to anyone who wants to get their hands on a few stems, right through to large bulk orders.
It costs a mighty $5 to visit the 1-acre haven – worth every cent if you enjoy a good garden stroll!
The garden consists of over 400 varieties, just a small dip in the crazy world of dahlias, of which there are thousands of different types.
I saw ‘Funny Face’, ‘Edinburgh’ and ‘Gala Parade’ varieties – which were marked with a soft purple piece of silk. Nice one Gala Parade!
Dahlia season is starting to wrap up, so the gardens weren’t as lush as they would have been a few months ago – traditionally starting in December and finishing up in April. Short and sweet.
