Saturday Night Lyrics: Karen O

Such is my love for Karen O that this Saturday Night Lyrics is a double feature…

The first is prompted by this sweet little post Yeah Yeah Yeahs made on their Facebook page yesterday –

“Karen has been nominated for an Academy Award for ‘The Moon Song’ from Spike Jonze’s HER!!!
From Karen: Holy SMOKES. I had zero clue! To say this was unexpected is an understatement. I called Spike and my parents just so it could sink in a little bit and then I put on Nina Simone’s cover of ‘I Shall be Released’ and sang along, it’s such a soulful uplifting rendition and always makes me feel so good. It’s wild because the moon song was written and recorded in the most humble of circumstances; at my dining room table, a few paces away from the couch I read the script for Her for the first time. The song was 10 years in the making according to Spike and testament to a beautiful friendship and creative chemistry we’ve shared over the years. I hope everyone and their sister, mother, father and uncle goes out to see Spike’s inspired heartfelt film. And thanks Spike for making my very real phobia of ever having to be in a position to give an acceptance speech at a major award show a reality.”

How lovely is that?! Fingers so crossed she gets to make that acceptance speech…

The second covers a new Yeah Yeah Yeahs release from 2013, ‘Despair’, my favourite from their album Mosquito and also possibly my favourite music video of the year (watch it below), equal parts uplifting and sorrowful, also the first music video ever shot at the top of the Empire State Building…

‘The Moon Song’, Karen O

I’m lying on the moon
My dear, I’ll be there soon
It’s a quiet starry place
Times we’re swallowed up
In space we’re here a million miles away

There’s things I wish I knew
There’s no thing I keep from you
It’s a dark and shiny place
But with you my dear
I’m safe and we’re a million miles away

We’re lying on the moon
It’s a perfect afternoon
Your shadow follows me all day
Making sure I’m okay and
We’re a million miles away

‘Despair’, Yeah Yeah Yeahs

Don’t despair, you’re there
From beginning to middle to end
Don’t despair, you’re there
Through my wasted days
You’re there through my wasted nights

Oh despair, you’ve always been there
You were there through my wasted years
Through all my lonely fears, no tears
Run through my fingers, tears
They’re stinging my eyes, no tears
If it’s all in my head there’s nothing to fear
Nothing to fear inside

Through the darkness and the light
Some sun has got to rise

My sun is your sun
Your sun is our sun

Oh despair, you were there through my wasted days
You’re there through my wasted nights
You’re there through my wasted years
You’re there through my wasted life

You’ve always been there
You were there through my wasted years
Through all of my lonely fears
Run through my fingers, tears
They’re stinging my eyes, no tears
We’re all on the edge, there’s nothing to fear
Nothing to fear inside

Through the darkness and the light
Some sun has got to rise

My sun is your sun
Your sun is our sun
