We love presenting a collection with a fresh detail or unique spin, so when we asked Penny Sage designer Kate Megaw for something a little special, beyond the (actually quite lovely) press release (bits of which are below, though Kate says, “I just always feel embarrassed seeing it published in full. I’m much better with images.”), she sent us over this cool collage of inspirational images, as well as three music tracks that influenced her new collection ‘Sleepaway’…
Summer heat holds a sleepy sort of nostalgia. Hot, heavy air on the back of necks and legs; slight, light garments that crush and caress; grass blades, cool water. Carefree feelings of adventure, the spontaneous, a reversion to teenage freedom feelings (if only for an afternoon).
Sleepaway was born of that nostalgia: for adventuring, for camping, for the natural world. It’s imbued with a youthful attitude to dressing – simple, wearable basics in a lightweight linen and silk mix, cotton & linen gauze. silk crepe de chine, and flocked or knitted cottons.
A visiting American volleyball team to her small New Zealand hometown during her formative years – beautiful, healthy, sporty; 80s cult horror film Sleepaway Camp, the California dreaming pop culture lens that fuelled her teenage escapism all informed the silhouettes of the Sleepaway collection.
