Undone Book Club #4

I’ve done a bit of a turnaround on the book for the coming month. I had something else in mind, but the book I’ve ended up choosing, How To Be Both by Ali Smith was on my shortlist for an earlier Undone Book Club (it was released in late 2014) but has just won the Bailey’s Women’s Prize for Fiction a fortnight ago, which is the only major international book award judged by an all-women panel and only includes female writers, so pretty cool…

It’s also winner of the 2014 Costa Novel Award, the Goldsmiths Prize 2014 and the Saltire Society LIterary Book of the Year Award 2014, was shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize 2014 and nominated for the Folio Prize 2015.

Some of you might have read it already? The big twist is that the book plays on the old fresco painting technique of stories layered over each other, and each copy is printed two possible ways, so you’ll get one or the other randomly, and which way you read it changes the whole experience/story… Remember those ‘choose your adventures’ books you read as a child? This is like a beautifully written adult version, but you’re dealing with fate instead of multi-choice. Kinda brilliant right?!

Here’s Laura Miller’s review for The Guardian and the New York Times review.

In case you’re as interested in the Bailey’s Awards as I am, here’s the 2015 long list and short list…

And as always, below are the others I was considering, in case you’re looking for extras…

In the Unlikely Event, Judy Blume
Young Originals: Emily Wilkens and the Teen Sophisticate, Rebecca Matheson
Bjork, Klaus Biesenbach
Hold Still, Sally Man
The Flow, Juergen Teller & Nicholas Ghesquiere
Have I Said Too Much, Carole White
