Shot on location at what used to be a Maori girls’ boarding school, Rachel Mills‘ newest campaign for her Autumn/Winter 2017 range is a celebration of fresh talent and collaboration.
The school has now become a collective studio base to some of Auckland‘s up and coming creatives. It houses fashion designers, jewellers and the like, offering up the artistic freedom that comes with having a space of their own.
Rachel approached the campaign as an opportunity to let go and allow others to take creative control.
“I love seeing the way others interpret my work, to achieve something that wouldn’t be possible independently.”
The range, titled Wavey, explores the personal expression that was emerging in the early 80s, personified by Grace Jones.
The garments see rich, velvety purples and deep navy silks positioned against a primary yellow and crisp white. Nods to the defiance of the time include worn edges and enzyme washed denim, while voluminous sleeves and cinched in waists take hold.
